JU JUTSU
Ju Jutsu - literally meaning the "art of softness", is a Japanese martial art consisting primarily of grappling techniques. Ju Jutsu, the current standard spelling, however, jiu-jitsu and jujitsu are earlier spellings are still common in many places. Ju-Jitsu is still the standard spelling in France, Canada and the United States.
As most "Ju Jitsuka" - a student of Ju Jutsu - know there is nothing "soft" or "gentle" about the martial art. What Ju is conveying is that Ju Jutsu does not use strength against strength, it uses the opponents strength and force of attack as a weapon against him, thus enabling a smaller opponent to subdue his larger or stronger attacker.With its many and varied forms Ju Jutsu is one of the most complete martial arts there is. It typically places more emphasis on throwing, immobilizing and pinning , joint-locking , choking, and strangling techniques - as compared with other martial arts systems such as karate's striking techniques since a samurai's body armor protected them against many types of striking blows.
Ju Jutsu evolved among the samurai warriors of feudal Japan as a method for dispatching an armed and armored opponent in situations where the use of weapons was impractical or forbidden. Due to the difficulty of dispatching an armored opponent with striking techniques, the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of throws, joint locks, and pins. These martial arts techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it.
Most accurately defined Ju Jutsu is a collection of methods for dealing with an enemy, both armed or unarmed using similar weapons. This included such weapons as the "katana" -sword, "yari" - spear, "naginata" - glaive, "jo" - short staff, "bo" - quarterstaff, "jutte" - truncheon, "tanto" - knife, "ryofundo kusari" - weighted chain, or the "bankokuchoki" - a type of brass knuckles. Its three classic forms can be generally characterized as - fighting with weapons, grappling while clad in armor, or fighting while dressed in a "kimono" or "hakama".In Ju Jutsu - as it was practiced hundreds of years ago - every conceivable technique, including biting, hair pulling, eye gouging, and so forth, is allowed, which led to a diversity of approaches and variations being taught. In Japan around 1600 AD there were over 2,000 schools of Ju Jutsu, many even incorporating forms of weapons training. Some schools went on to diverge into present day Karate, Aikido and Judo styles. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is another of today's popular martial arts that can trace its lineage to Ju Jutsu.
Today, Ju Jutsu is practiced both in its original form, but it has also been modified for sport practice.
