TAE KWON DO tae kwon do

Tae kwon Do is the world's most widely practice martial art. It is a traditional Korean hard-style fighting art. It's techniques and forms have been greatly influenced by the martial arts of China and Japan, and looks somewhat similar to Karate. Most practitioners consider it to be a defense style martial art.

In Korean, "tae"- means to destroy with the feet; "kwon" - means fist; and "do" - means "path" or "way". Hence, tae kwon do is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist". This is an appropriate translation because most of it's techniques include powerful kicks, jumps, spins, hand-strikes and blocks.

Tae Kwon Do emphasizes using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance, through its many various kicks- turning, front, reverse turning, side jumping, spinning, sliding and skipping, to name a few. Hand and fists moves include a system of blocks, punches, and open-handed strikes. Other techniques and combinations may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks.

Jhoon RheeMany students take up tae kwon do because it's helps strengthen and tone muscles, develops stamina, flexibility and speed. It's array of many different types of kicks create an aerobic like work out. One of tae kwon do's more notable practitioners is Jhoon Rhee, widely recognised as the 'Father of American Taekwondo' . Grand Master Jhoon Rhee was a teacher and close friend of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, and even appeared in some of his films.

Tae Kwon Do ranks are represented by the Korean word "geup". The junior ranks are usually identified by belts of various colors. Rank is sometimes indicated by stripes on belts rather than by colored belts. Students begin at tenth "geup" - usually a white belt and advance toward first "geup".

Senior ranks are made up of nine degrees of black belt, and an honorary tenth degree which can only be attained after your death. These ranks are called "dan", and referred to as black belt "degrees" - as in "third dan" or "third degree black belt". A black belt's degree is often indicated on the belt with stripes, or Roman numerals.

Modern teachings of this martial art are supported by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. This association supports the idea that anyone can learn and benefit from exposure to this artistic discipline, regardless of sex, size, and age. Because Tae Kwon Do is so widespread internationally, it was accepted as a demonstration event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It became an official medal event as of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Tae Kwon Do is one of only two Asian martial arts - Judo being the other - in the Olympic Games.
