WING CHUN

Wing Chun - is a Chinese martial art that specializes in aggressive "close-up" combat style. It teaches practitioners to advance quickly to get up close, past an opponent's kicks and punches, where a repertoire of close range strikes can be strung together to form a "chain" of attacks which are a Wing Chun trademark. Thus, in theory, with correct techniques, a smaller person with a shorter range can defeat a much larger person by getting inside their range of attack. The beginnings of most martial arts have historically been passed from teacher to student as an oral history rather than a written one. This makes it difficult to confirm different historical accounts. This is true with Wing Chun's creation. It's generally believed that it was developed in southern China approximately 300 years ago by Ng Mui, a Buddhist Shaolin Kung Fu master. Ng Mui used his knowledge of Shaolin fighting systems to develop a way to defeat them.
This new system was well guarded and passed on to only a few, very dedicated students. Then, as a common legend has it, a young woman by the name of Yim Wing Chun asks Ng Mui, to teach her skills to defend herself against the advances of a local warlord. With Ng Mui's tutorship Yim Wing Chun is able to defeat the warlord, and later marry her sweetheart, who also studies in the combat styles names it after her. Wing Chun translates as "spring chant", or alternatively as "eternal springtime". Tenets of this martial art include practicality, efficiency and economy of movement. Wing Chun believes correct position and movement can and should be used to defeat an opponent. This is achieved through balance, structure and relaxation. Strikes are intended to injure or disrupt the target. Efficiency is based on the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Likewise primary targets all lie along an imaginary vertical line bisecting an opponent's vital areas - throat, heart, stomach, and groin. A Wing Chun punch is delivered centrally from the chest rather than diagonally from the shoulders.
Wing Chun has been practiced in southern China for hundreds of years, but it was virtually unknown in the west until Bruce Lee's rise in popularity. Lee trained extensively in Wing Chun, before moving on to studying many other martial arts. His fame was the catalyst that led to new international interest in Wing Chun. Later when Bruce Lee formed his own martial art - Jeet Kune Do - he incorporated into it, many of Wing Chun's techniques and theories.
